Why Tokyo

A city that holds
centuries of ceremony

Beyond the neon and the noise lies a city of extraordinary stillness. Ancient shrines. Private gardens. Time, suspended.

Private Shrine
Access

We secure exclusive permits at shrines and temple gardens rarely open to the public. No tour groups. No strangers. Just the two of you, the ancient stone, and the light filtering through a forest that has stood for three centuries.

II
No Language
Barrier

Aiko, our Tokyo-based planner, is a Japanese citizen fluent in English. The negotiations, the cultural protocols, the vendor relationships — handled entirely by someone who lives here and understands both worlds completely.

First

We are photographers before we are planners. Every venue, every hour of your day, every location transition is chosen for how it will look, feel, and be remembered. Light is the material we work in.

Multi-Location
Days

Combine a morning shrine ceremony in Tokyo with Kamakura’s coastal light at golden hour. We build your day as a curated journey, moving through landscapes and atmospheres that no single venue could provide.

For Couples Who Want Something Real

You did not fly to Japan to stand in a hotel ballroom.
You came for the extraordinary.

Planning a wedding in a foreign country, in a language you do not speak, through a culture you are still discovering, is genuinely difficult. Most international couples either give up on the dream or hand it to a generic agency that treats them like a transaction.

We built Nomad Weddings Japan specifically for couples like you. International, curious, in love with Japan, and unwilling to settle for a package that could have been photographed anywhere in the world.

Our team are English-speaking Japanese locals who have spent years building relationships with venue managers, shrine priests, and ceremony officiants across Tokyo and Kamakura. When you work with us, those relationships work for you.

There are no hidden fees, no surprises on the day, and no moment where you feel like a tourist at your own wedding. We handle every detail so that the only thing you have to do is be present for the most important day of your lives.

What our couples say

James and Aiko are the most genuine people — I was honoured to have them make our day so special. Aiko greeted us and whisked us away to get hair and makeup done, even bringing snacks so we didn’t get hungry. James let us choose our ceremony spot, and Aiko came with us to every location holding our bouquets, keeping our daughter occupied, and making sure we didn’t have to worry about a thing. This team couldn’t have made our day any better, easier, or more personal.

Everything you
need to know

Can foreigners legally marry in Japan?
Yes. Foreigners can legally register a marriage in Japan. The process requires documentation from your home country and a visit to a local municipal office. We can coordinate this process for you as an add-on to any package, guiding you through every step.
What is the difference between Tokyo and Kamakura for an elopement?
Tokyo offers iconic urban backdrops: shrines between skyscrapers, traditional tatami rooms, the Shibuya crossing at dusk. Kamakura, one hour south, is the ancient capital: dramatic coastal light, bamboo groves, towering temple gates, and quiet beaches. Many couples combine both in a single day.
Do we need to speak Japanese?
Not at all. Aiko, our Tokyo planner, handles all communication with venue managers, vendors, and officiants in Japanese. You simply arrive and experience everything. No translation apps required.
What is the best time of year to elope in Tokyo?
Spring (late March to early May) brings cherry blossoms and soft golden light. Autumn (October to November) offers crimson maple leaves and rich atmosphere. Both are extraordinary. Summer can be humid; winter is crisp and clear with beautiful blue skies. We book up quickly for cherry blossom season, so early enquiry is advised.
How far in advance should we book?
We recommend enquiring at least three to six months ahead, particularly for spring and autumn. Cherry blossom dates are unpredictable but we begin taking reservations from November for the following spring. For more flexible dates, we can sometimes accommodate bookings within four to six weeks.
Is hair and makeup included?
Hair and makeup is an optional add-on available with any package. We coordinate with trusted local professionals who have experience working with international clients, and can arrange sessions for one or both partners.
