Our Approach

Documentary wedding
photography in Japan.

We don’t direct much. The best photographs from your wedding day are the ones that happened while you weren’t paying attention: the way you looked at each other right before the ceremony, the moment someone in the family started crying, the light breaking through a bamboo grove at 7am when nobody else was there.

Our photographers are based in Japan. They know where the light falls in Kyoto’s temple gardens in April. They know the quietest hour at Fushimi Inari. They know which corner of a Niseko ryokan turns golden in winter afternoon sun. That local knowledge is something you cannot replicate with a travel photographer who flies in the day before.

Every image is individually curated and edited. No filters. No heavy presets. Colour and tone that will look exactly right in 30 years.

Why Nomad

Why choose an English-speaking
wedding photographer in Japan.

There are a lot of photographers who will travel to Japan for your wedding. Most of them are good. The difference with Nomad is not style; it’s proximity. We live in the cities where we shoot. We know the locations before your wedding day, not because of a location scouting visit, but because we were there last week with a different couple.

For international couples, an English-speaking Japan wedding photographer who is also locally based is a rare combination. Most photographers operating in Japan either live overseas and travel in, or are Japan-based but don’t communicate fluently in English. We are both: local and English-speaking, in every region we serve.

01

Based in Japan. Not visiting.

Our photographers live in Kyoto, Tokyo, Niseko, and Okinawa. They know the light, the seasonal rhythms, and the locations in a way that a visiting photographer can’t replicate.
02

English-speaking. Fluently.

Every member of the Nomad team communicates in English throughout the entire process: enquiry, planning, and on the day itself. No interpreter needed.
03

You get the photographer you booked.

We don’t subcontract. The photographer you see in our portfolio is the photographer who shows up. This is not always guaranteed with larger agencies.
04

Photo and video are edited to match.

When you book both, your images and film share the same colour treatment. Your gallery and highlight film look like they were made by the same team. They were.
05

Photo-only bookings welcome.

You don’t need a full elopement package to work with us. If you have your own planner and just need a Japan wedding photographer, our standalone packages are available for all regions.

James and Aiko are the most genuine people. I was honoured to have them make our day so special. Aiko greeted us and whisked us away to get hair and makeup done, even bringing snacks so we didn’t get hungry. James let us choose our ceremony spot, and Aiko came with us to every location holding our bouquets, keeping our daughter occupied, and making sure we didn’t have to worry about a thing. This team couldn’t have made our day any better, easier, or more personal.

Common Questions

Japan wedding photography
FAQ.

Answers to the questions couples ask most before booking their Japan wedding photographer or videographer. More detail is available on our full FAQ page.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Japan?
Our Japan wedding photography packages start at ¥250,000 (approximately $1,700 USD) for an intimate elopement in Niseko, ¥350,000 for a half-day, and ¥500,000 for full-day coverage. Videography is available as an add-on from ¥300,000. All prices are inclusive of 10% Japanese consumption tax. Exact pricing depends on your location and coverage requirements.
Do you speak English?
Yes. Every photographer, videographer, and planner on the Nomad team is English-speaking. You will never need a translator on your wedding day.
What areas of Japan do you cover?
We cover Kyoto, Tokyo, Niseko, Furano, Miyakojima, Okinawa, and the surrounding regions. We have local team members based in each area, not photographers who travel in from Tokyo.
Can I hire just photography, without a full planning package?
Yes. Our photo and video packages are available as standalone services for couples who have already arranged their own ceremony and planning. You don’t need to book a full elopement package to work with Nomad.
How long until I receive my photos?
Half-day and full-day packages are delivered within 6 to 8 weeks. Elopement packages within 4 to 6 weeks. All images arrive via a private online gallery with full-resolution download.
What does the wedding videography add-on include?
Full ceremony coverage plus a 3 to 5 minute 4K highlight film edited to music. It can be added to any photography package for ¥300,000. The film and photos are colour-matched so your full gallery is consistent.
Do I get the photographer shown in your portfolio?
Yes. We don’t subcontract to photographers outside the Nomad team. The work in our portfolio is the work of the specific photographer assigned to your booking. You can always ask to see examples from a particular team member before confirming.
